What Young Peacebuilders (YP) Does

Young Peacebuilders nurtures peacebuilding passion and skills in violence-affected children and youth.  We do this through partnerships, research, projects, and tools that help young people build peace in their own communities and abroad. In this way YP helps prevent and end cycles of violence. We also help design effective child and youth peacebuilding projects, tools, and research for others. Our goal is to see a major shift in the dominant method of addressing contemporary conflicts toward investing in young people as peacebuilders. More at

The successful candidate will be passionate about YP’s mission and have both internal and external facing responsibilities. The Director of Communications is responsible for planning, development and implementation of Young Peacebuilders’ communications strategy, marketing communications, and public relations activities, both external and internal. The Director of Communications oversees development and implementation of support materials and services for Young Peacebuilders in the area of marketing, communications and public relations and directs the efforts of the communications staff.


Plan communications activities

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan across the network's audiences in collaboration with Young Peacebuilders’ team and constituents

  • Work with leadership team to develop communications processes and define priorities to create an environment in which messages can be communicated clearly, creatively and effectively.

  • Keep informed of developments in the fields of communications and public relations, not-for-profit management and governance, to help Young Peacebuilders operate with initiative and innovation.

Organize communications activities

  • Lead the generation of content across various mediums that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action

  • Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities

  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic materials including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, annual report, e-newsletters, and Young Peacebuilders’ website

  • Coordinate webpage maintenance—ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly

  • Track and measure the level of engagement within the network over time

  • Manage all media contacts

Staff communications activities

  • Cultivate, lead and manage a team of communications volunteers (writers, photographers, designers, etc.)


  • University degree in journalism, marketing, public relations preferred. Graduate degree in a related field is desirable

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in marketing, communications or public relations with demonstrated success, preferably in the not-for-profit sector.

  • Experience working with volunteers is desirable

  • Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies

  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills with ability to create clear communication, brand presence and consistency

  • Is current on creative, communications and technological trends and looks for opportunities to use this information to more effectively communicate with the various audiences

  • Communicate Effectively: Speak, listen and write in a clear, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.

  • Foster Teamwork: Works cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problem, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

  • Lead: Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization.

  • Make Decisions: Assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the organization.

  • Organize: Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information and activities.

  • Plan: Determine strategies to move the organization forward, set goals, create and implement actions plans, and evaluate the process and results.

  • Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.
